I’d forgotton all about the existence of Rainbow until someone sent me this.
Rainbow was an extraordinary show for what it excluded. A reasonable explanation was never given for how a man called Geoffrey came to be living with George, a pink gay Hippo, a borderline autistic bear by the name of Bungle and a loud, domineering orange entity called Zippy. Geoffrey’s sole purpose in life seemed to be to provide the grotesque trio with simple, futile tasks and inane topics of conversation.
I accept that the simple premise was merely a vehicle for encouraging language and numerical skills amongst children, but even at a young age I was struck by the slightly sinister psychadelic abstraction that was implicit throughout.
